St. Declan’s News

Term 2 2024 News:

  • All classes have been busy bees working extremely diligently on their curricular work and putting on gorgeous art and craft displays in the corridors.

  • We held our first ‘Grandparents’ Day’ in late January. It was a roaring success and will be on the calendar as an annual event going forward! The children performed some beautiful musical pieces in their classes, then the whole school were joined by Mr. Victor Mullins accompanying the fabulous Patricia Whyte to revive two classic songs: ‘Grandma’s Feather Bed’ and ‘The Child of Ardmore’.

  • The 26th and 28th of February saw our boys and girls from 4th, 5th and 6th classes compete in the FAI Primary 5’s competition in Cappoquin. All teams acquitted themselves very well with one boys’ and one girls’ team reaching the finals of this stage. The boys’ team were narrowly beaten by a very strong Scoil Gharbhán team in a thrilling final. The girls’ team progressed to the next stage of the tournament which will take place in April at the SETU arena, Waterford.

  • On the 4th March 3rd to 6th class attended St. Augustines College to see the spectacular musical, We Will Rock You, staged by the TY students there. We were thrilled to see so many of our past pupils in starring and supportive roles!

  • This Friday, 22nd March, the school will host its annual Cake Sale and Easter Raffle with all proceeds going to the PA. The 6th class will take charge of the stalls and the children of the school will be able to buy some treats before we open to the public at 11am. The raffle will take place at 11.50am before the children take their well earned break for the Easter Celebrations!

The Parents’ Association will hold their AGM on Thursday 12th October at 8pm at the school. They would love to see as many parents there as possible!

FAI Primary 5-side Soccer:

On last Monday 27th February we had six teams travel to Cappoquin to take part in the annual FAI blitz. This was the first one we had attended since the pandemic and there was great excitement! We thoroughly enjoyed the day and the children acquitted themselves superbly. Our oldest girls and boys teams both qualified for the county finals in the SETU Arena, Waterford on 19th April.

Zumba:

We were so lucky to have had local lady, April O’Brien, in our school for 5 weeks of Zumba dance lessons! April worked tirelessly with all classes to teach them a number of dances to chart topping songs. The children revelled in the dance and music and competed week on week to win the boys versus girls competition!! The lessons culminated in an outdoor concert where each class performed their dances for the rest of the school. We would like to thank April for her enthusiasm and dedication throughout the five weeks of classes.

Hurling and Camóige Blitz at Pobalscoil na Trionóide 31/01/23

The boys and girls of 4th and 5th class attended a lovely blitz at Pobalscoil, Youghal on Tuesday 31st January. The blitz was excellently run and the children really enjoyed themselves. We were delighted with the standard of hurling we observed and both teams came second in their respective groups! Well done to all involved.

Christmas 2022

The children participated in our annual Carol Service on 8th December. It was our first in-person Carol Service since the pandemic. We were so excited to have the children perform once again for their parents and families. We were delighted to have a large attendance on the night.

Following the beautiful performances, we all went back to school and enjoyed some refreshments provided by the Parents’ Association. The PA ran their annual Christmas raffle after the refreshments, this was extremely exciting and was a huge success!
