Kestrel

Picture of female Kestrel taken by Seán Flavin in 3rd class on the Cliff walk Spring 2021

The Irish name for Kestrel is ‘Pocaire Gaoithe’. I took these pictures on the Cliff walk. Kestrels are widespread throughout Ireland. They are small birds of prey and often confused with Sparrow hawks. Kestrels are a species of Falcon. Female Kestrels like this one have a series of bands on a brown tail, males have only one band. Kestrels eat small mammals and insects.
