The Dandelion

Dandelion Photo Edward Breen.jpg

Dandelions are bright yellow orange flowers. The Irish name is Caisearbhan. Dandelions, (Taraxacum Officinale), were named after the French dent de lion, meaning lion's tooth, which refers to its toothed leaves. They appear in gardens and on roadsides from early spring. They have a long flowering season from March to October.

Dandelions are flowers that closes at night or in dull weather but open when the sun shines. The dandelion is a unique flower that doesn't require pollination and is rich in nectar. They are a valuable food for bees, butterflies and other nectar eating insects. From a human point of view every part of the plant is edible. From a child's perspective they are wonderful when a fluffy seedhead or dandelion clock appears for us to blow.
